Villány is the southernmost wine region of Hungary close to the border with Croatia and is named after the city of the same name. The region boasts some of the best red wines of the country made from Bordeaux grape varieties and most of the wines are blends, but the Cabernet Franc has become a benchmark of Villány alongside with some outstanding Pinot Noir and Syrah. This is as well the warmest region with a continental climate and light Mediterranean influences, with long, hot summers and cold winters, the vines thrive on soils that are principally limestone with loam layers. A special microclimate has evolved from the Villány Mountains, where powerful, long-lived red wines are made under favourable conditions and Around the city of Siklós where mainly white wines are made from Hárslevelű and Chardonnay. An upcoming region to look for.
