Zelen is an ancient and rare light-skinned white grape variety native to Vipavska Dolina region of Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea. Its name means "green" and it is related to the greenish grape juice after filtration. Zelen produces light, crisp and herbaceous wine, accompanied by a gentle fruity and flowery aroma and a fresh taste. Zelen is a low-yielding grape variety which flourishes in the windy climate of the Vipavska Dolina region, able to give more complex wines when left with the lees and aged in oak. It is commonly blended with Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia to create well-rounded white wines with nice freshness and minerality. The grape was completely lost, although it is very old, thanks to a couple of young producers, Zelen was resurrected and now is one of the leading white wine grapes in Slovenia. It is nowhere to be found outside Slovenia.
