Žametovka is a very old light-skinned red grape variety indigenous to Slovenia with numerous names and synonyms formally widespread all over Europe. The grape is late-ripening, sensitive to frost and is highly resistant to pests, producing fresh red wine with high acidity content, which is mainly used as a blend characterised by typical pale colour, light, fresh, and distinctive raspberry flavours. The variety is planted in Slovenia in the northeast part of the country around the city of Maribor, where the famous "Stara Trta" (old vine) the world's oldest vine at 450 years old, still grows on the house facade of the city. Unfortunately, nowadays the grape can be found only in Slovenia and it is no longer of wine production importance outside the country.
