Viura also known as Macabeo is a white wine grape grown on either side of the Pyrenees mountains, in the northeast of Spain and southwest of France. A relatively versatile grape, it is used in still, sparkling and sweet wines and because of that, the wines produced with Viura or Macabeo can be fresh, floral and aromatic or full, honeyed and nutty when aged in oak or harvested later. Spain is unquestionably Viura home and it is the main grape in white wines from Rioja, and it is used in almost every wine produced in the region of Catalonia, including Cava. In France, the grape can be found almost exclusively in the southern parts of Languedoc-Roussillon.
