Saperavi is an old dark-skinned red grape variety native to Georgia, and it is widespread throughout the Caucasus. The grape variety is mainly planted in the easterly situated wine-growing region of Kakheti, where it gives birth to its best expressions. The name of Saperavi means “the place of colour" in Georgian. The varietal is one of the few teinturier grape varieties of the world with a red flesh as well as red skin, and it is late-ripening variety. The colour characteristics of the Saperavi are deep, inky, and often fully opaque. The aromas and the flavours are reminding of dark berries, chocolate, grilled meat, tobacco, liquorice and spices. The wines are proving to be with very good ageing potential as well. The best examples are making powerful red wines and fruity semi-sweet and sweet wines. Outside Georgia is also planted in Armenia, Australia, Bulgaria, Moldova and the United States.
