Rubin
Rubin is a thick-skinned red grape variety native to Bulgaria selected in the late 40s of the XX century at the Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, by crossing the varieties Nebiolo and Syrah. It is recommended for the Southern and Eastern wine-growing regions of Bulgaria. The grape is medium-ripening variety, ripens in the first half of September and grows well on hilly terrain with deep, medium-rich soils. It is as well very vigorous, good fertility and average yield 1000 - 1200 kg. The grapes are resistant to cracking and grey rot. After ripening, it raisins and increases its sugar content. It is mostly used to produce high-quality table, semi-sweet and sweet types dessert wines, characterized by deep dark red colour, extractive and complex with good harmonious taste with notes of blueberry, blackberry and violet. The wines made from the Rubin have extraordinary ageing potential and currently, the grape is gaining popularity outside the country. It is only to be found in Bulgaria.
