Rară Neagră is an old dark-skinned der grape variety native to Stefan Voda wine-growing region of Moldova. The name of the grape in Moldovian means "rare black", and it produces one of the most prominent intense and powerful red wines of the country. It is a late-ripening grape variety sensitive to frost but seldom affected by fungi and insects. It is often used in bends with Fetească Neagră. The Rară Neagră grape is characterised by ruby colour with a pomegranate accent which is accompanied by a complex aroma with notes of chocolate and plum, and a full taste with velvety hints of dried fruits. When vinified in oak it can mature for decades and develops complex taste and aromas. It is very suitable for the production of sweet wines when the weather conditions are favourable for that. Outside the country, the grape has plantings in Romania.
