Petit Verdot is a small red thick-skinned grape with deep colour, that is native to the Bordeaux region of France. Initially, Petit Verdot was only used in tiny amounts of the Bordeaux Blend, particularly with Cabernet Sauvignon. Currently, it has spread to the warmer climates of the New World, where the winemakers began to take an interest in its intense flavours and produce it as a single grape varietal. The warmer climates of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina and Australia have proven to be very successful with this grape to achieve its best potential. California’s Central Coast and Napa Valley are doing a great job with it as well. Like most powerful reds, it highlights dark forest fruits like blackberries, cherries, and plums but the unique hint of the Petit Verdot is the strong herbal and floral notes. Also, there are intense aromas of violet and sage plus notes of vanilla, spice, coffee and smoke.
