Négrette is an old dark-skinned red grape variety originating from the island of Cyprus where it was known as Mavro. Now its home is undoubtedly Frontonappellation in Gaillac southwestern France. Both red and rosé wines are produced from the grape as the reds are light, fruity, floral and spicy with distinctive flavour characteristics of violets and roses. The variety has deep dark pigmentation, low acidity and low tannin content and because of that, it is often used in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It is extremely prone to diseases like powdery mildew and grey rot and it very difficult to grow. Outside France, the grape is almost nowhere to be planted except California.
