The Montepulciano grape has uncertain origin and it is often confused with the Sangiovese , probably because of the Tuscan appellation "Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG ", today it is certain that the two grapes have nothing in common. The Montepulciano grape is grown mainly in the Marche, Abruzzo and other regions of the center/south of Italy and its origin is almost certainly from Abruzzo. The Montepulciano is one of the best red grapes of the centre of Italy and is a grape that is used in blends but also produces outstanding wines when vinified on its own
