Monastrell is very old dark-skinned red grape variety native to Valencia in Spain and found all over the western Mediterranean under the name Mourvèdre. The grape has intense colour very high tannin content and likes hot climates, producing rich and powerful red wines suitable for long maturation. It is used the production of various styles of wines, including sparkling, rosé, and naturally sweet wines. The best expressions of pure Monastrell are to be found in the Jumilla region of Spain and all eastern part of the country and Bandol in the south of France. It is very often blended with Grenache and Syrah in the famous wines of southern Rhône Valley of France. Outside Europe, it has reached Australia and California where it makes some very excellent wines under the name Mataró.
