Counoise is a dark-skinned red wine grape variety which takes part in the production of blended wines of southern France. The origin shows Southern Rhône valley and it is one of the permitted grapes for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends and also renowned grape for the production of rosé in Provence. The grape adds to the blend balanced acidity, finesse and it is has a rich, spicy character, with flavours of anise and strawberries. Counoise is usually blended because has not so intense colour pigmentation and structure, but it has high acidity which makes it the perfect companion of the heavy red grape varieties in Provence, Rhône and Languedoc. California is the only region, outside France it has found a home.
