Băbească Neagră is an old dark-skinned red grape variety origin belongs to Romania with the most unusual name in Romanian translates as "black grandmother". That is maybe because of its age, being one of the oldest grape varieties of the country, very popular among the natives. Băbească Neagră produces light and fruity red wine with notes of sour cherry, typically designed for early consumption, but a handful of small producers are achieving quite the opposite result making more complex dense and age-worthy wines. It is a late-ripening vine susceptible to both types of mildew, botrytis and drought, but resistant to frost down to -20 °C. Plantings of the Băbească Neagră are found only in the neighbouring Republic of Moldova.
